South Korea holds Iran before break

South Korea held the attack-minded Iran to a scoreless draw in the first half of the 14th Asian Cup quarterfinal in Bukit Jalil National Stadium in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur Sunday.

Iran possessed the ball and field and almost took the lead when international playmaker, Ali Karimi, had only the Korean keeper Lee Woon-Jae to beat, but his left drive was blocked by the advancing goalie on the edge of the box three minutes from the interval.

This is the fourth consecutive time the three-time champion Iran is meeting South Korea in the quarterfinal, with the Iranians leading 2-1 on head-to-head meetings.

Iran outscored Korea 4-3 in the 2004 quarterfinal, lost 2-1 after extra-time in 2000 and thumped the Koreans 6-2 in 1996.

Overall the Iranians lead Korea 3-2 in matches at the tournament
